Before the Spanish arrived in the Philippines in 1565, Filipinos had their own writing system. They wrote on bamboo, leaves, and bark using a beautiful, flowing script called Baybayin — an ancient abugida (syllabic alphabet) indigenous to the Philippine archipelago. It was used across Luzon and many of the Visayan islands, and it connected generations of Filipinos to each other and to their stories long before colonization introduced the Latin alphabet.
For centuries, Baybayin was nearly lost. But today, the Filipino community is bringing it back — and our Baybayin workshop is one small but meaningful part of that movement. At Ugat Clothing, we believe that learning Baybayin isn't just a cultural activity. It's an act of reclamation. What You'll Learn in the Baybayin Workshop
Our Baybayin workshop is designed to be accessible, engaging, and genuinely educational — not a surface-level cultural experience, but a real introduction to one of the Philippines' most significant pre-colonial traditions. Each session runs 1 hour and 30 minutes, divided into two parts: a 45-minute structured lesson and a 30-minute guided practice session.
In the lesson portion of the Baybayin workshop, your expert facilitator will walk you through the basics of the Baybayin script: how it's structured, how it reads, its historical origins, and its cultural significance in Filipino history. You'll learn how the script works as an abugida — meaning each character represents a consonant + vowel syllable — and how vowel marks called kudlit modify those sounds. You'll come away understanding not just how to write Baybayin, but why it matters.
In the practice portion, you'll put pen to paper — or marker to paper — and begin writing in Baybayin yourself. You'll write your own name. You'll try family names. You'll explore Tagalog words that are meaningful to you. The goal isn't perfection — it's connection. Each Baybayin workshop session runs 1 hour and 30 minutes — 45 minutes of structured lesson and 30 minutes of hands-on practice. The format is designed to give you both the cultural context and the practical skills in a single session.
What days and times are available?
Baybayin workshops are available Monday through Friday in three time slots each day: 4:00–5:30 pm PST, 6:00–7:30 pm PST, and 8:00–9:30 pm PST. Select your preferred day and time when you register. Your date will be confirmed once we receive your order.
What do I need to bring or prepare?
