Ancient Filipino Clothing: What Pre-Colonial Filipinos Wore

What did Filipinos wear before Spanish colonization? Some of the best evidence comes from the Boxer Codex, an illustrated manuscript from around 1590.

What the Boxer Codex shows

The codex includes color illustrations of Tagalog, Visayan and other peoples. Men wear jackets, loincloths and headcloths. Women wear wrap skirts and blouses. Many figures wear gold jewelry.

Tattoos

Visayans are shown with extensive body tattoos. The Spanish called them Pintados, the painted ones. Tattoos marked bravery and status.

Gold

Archaeological finds like the Surigao treasure show how skilled pre-colonial goldsmiths were. Gold was worn as necklaces, earrings and belts.

Color and status

Some early accounts note that colors, especially red, could signal rank. Datus and warriors dressed to show status.

Fabrics

Clothing was made from local fibers like abaca and cotton, as well as traded silk and cloth.
