Bay Area Organizations Call for Relief for Wildfire Victims

The National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), together with other San Francisco Bay Area organizations, calls on the community to provide much-need support to those affected by the ongoing wildfires in Napa, Sonoma, Yuba, and Solano counties of Northern California. The fires, which started on October 8th, has affected over 180,000 acres and destroyed 5,700 structures. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate. The death toll, which has jumped to at least 35, is expected to increase as search efforts continue in neighborhoods from Santa Rosa to the hills of Napa County.

As firefighters continue their efforts to gain control of the fires, NAFCON is working with Migrante Napa/Solano (a grassroots organization serving Filipino immigrants), the First United Methodist Church (UMC) in Santa Rosa, and other local organizations to monitor the situation, gather reliable resources and information, and collect monetary and in-kind donations for fire victims.

NAFCON has effectively provided relief donations to typhoon and disaster victims in the Philippines since 2009, partnering with credible organizations based in communities directly impacted by these calamities. It hopes to extend similar assistance, resources and compassion to fire-affected families in the Northern Bay Area--especially the most vulnerable workers and immigrants--during this tough time. In addition to providing immediate relief, NAFCON will further evaluate how it will contribute to the affected communities’ long-term rehabilitation.
