Yasmine in Street Fighter 6: The Filipino Culture Behind the First Filipina Fighter

2 min read

For decades, Filipino fans played Street Fighter without seeing themselves in it. Yasmine changes that. She's the first canonically Filipino fighter in the franchise's history — and the details in her design show real care for the culture.

The voice

Yasmine is voiced by Abby Espiritu, a first-generation Filipino American.

The fighting style: Eskrima and Yaw-Yan

Her moveset draws on Filipino martial arts — Eskrima (also known as Arnis or Kali), the stick- and blade-fighting art, and Yaw-Yan, the Filipino kickboxing style.

The blade

She fights with a karambit, the curved blade associated with the Philippines and the wider region, decorated with Philippine Eagle motifs — the national bird.

Baybayin on her belt

Look closely and you'll see Baybayin on her costume, reading "Pilipinas." Baybayin is the pre-colonial script of the Tagalog people — one of several indigenous scripts of the islands, alongside Kulitan, Badlit and others.

Buscalan-inspired tattoos

Her tattoo patterns are inspired by the batok tradition of Buscalan, Kalinga — the hand-tapped tattooing kept alive for generations by Kalinga mambabatok.

Tagalog move names

Her moves have Tagalog names, including "Pamumukadkad ng Sampaguita" (the blooming of the sampaguita, the national flower) and "Bayani Mode."

Family at the center

Her story centers on family — her lolo and her kuya — something any Filipino will recognize.

Why it matters

Representation done with care teaches millions of players something real about who we are. Baybayin, batok, Arnis, the Philippine Eagle, sampaguita — these are the same roots Ugat has always designed around. Pre-colonial pride isn't a trend. It's a root.
