Traditional Filipino Outfits for a Wedding: Guests, Couple and Entourage
Filipino weddings are big, joyful and full of tradition. Here's a guide to traditional Filipino outfits for everyone involved.
The couple
Many grooms wear the barong Tagalog, often in piña or jusi, over a white undershirt with dark trousers. Brides may choose a Filipiniana gown with butterfly sleeves or a modern dress with Filipino details.
The entourage
Principal sponsors, the ninong and ninang, often wear barongs and Filipiniana. Some couples ask everyone in the entourage to match a theme.
Guests
Unless the invitation says otherwise, men can't go wrong with a barong. Women can wear a Filipiniana dress or simply a formal outfit.
Traditions to know
Watch for the veil, the cord (yugal) and the arrhae (13 coins) during Catholic Filipino ceremonies, and the money dance at the reception.
For the after-party
Some families do a casual fiesta the next day. That's the time for a barong-style tee or a heritage jersey.
