Traditional Filipino Clothing for Men, by Region
Traditional Filipino clothing for men varies a lot by region. Here's a tour.
Tagalog and lowland Luzon
The barong Tagalog for formal events, the camisa de chino for everyday and folk dance, and the salakot hat.
Ilocos
Ilocano men have worn shirts and wraps of inabel, the region's handwoven cotton.
Cordillera
The bahag, a woven loincloth, sometimes with a woven blanket or jacket, beadwork and headgear. Patterns can indicate status and community.
Visayas
Early accounts describe Visayan men with extensive tattoos, gold jewelry and wraps. In later centuries, the barong and camisa became common.
Mindanao and Sulu
Tausug, Maranao and Maguindanao men may wear fitted trousers and jackets, the malong and headwear like the turban or pis syabit. Yakan men from Basilan wear tight-fitting woven trousers.
Today
Many young Filipino men now mix these influences into streetwear.
