Traditional Filipino Clothes for Men: Barong, Camisa de Chino and Bahag
Traditional Filipino clothes for men go well beyond the formal barong. Here are the key pieces.
Barong Tagalog
The embroidered, lightweight shirt worn untucked over an undershirt. It's the standard for weddings and formal events.
Camisa de chino
A simple collarless, long-sleeved shirt, usually white or off-white. It was everyday wear for many men and still appears in folk dances, often with rolled trousers.
Bahag
The woven loincloth of the Cordillera peoples, sometimes worn with a woven blanket or jacket. Patterns and colors can show a man's community and status.
Mindanao menswear
Tausug and Maranao men may wear fitted trousers, jackets and a malong, with a headcloth called a pis syabit among the Tausug.
Accessories
The salakot, a wide hat woven from bamboo or rattan, protects from sun and rain and is still an icon.
