The Barong Guide for Men: Fabrics, Fit and How to Wear It
The barong Tagalog is the key traditional Filipino garment for men. Here's how to choose and wear one.
Fabrics
Piña: the finest and most expensive, from pineapple fiber
Piña-silk and jusi: lighter on the budget, still elegant
Organza and blends: the most affordable, good for one-time events
Fit
A barong should be roomy but not baggy. Sleeves end at the wrist, and the hem usually sits around the hips.
What to wear underneath
Traditionally a camisa de chino or a plain white undershirt. Avoid printed or colored shirts that show through.
How to wear it
Always untucked. Pair with dark trousers and dress shoes. Cufflinks are optional on formal barongs.
Long sleeve vs. short sleeve
Long sleeves for formal events and weddings. Short-sleeve 'polo barongs' for office and semi-formal wear.
Care
Hand wash or dry clean. Store on a padded hanger.
Wear the story
For the casual version, shop barong-style mesh tees. UGAT means roots. Know yours.
