Filipino Traditional Costume Ideas for Buwan ng Wika and School Events
Every August, schools in the Philippines celebrate Buwan ng Wika, the national language month, and students are often asked to wear a Filipino traditional costume. Schools abroad have similar cultural days. Here are ideas that are easy to put together.
For girls and women
A simple baro't saya: a white or sheer blouse with a long skirt
A patadyong skirt with a plain top
A Filipiniana top with butterfly sleeves
For boys and men
A barong Tagalog, or a white long-sleeve shirt as a simple stand-in
A camisa de chino (collarless shirt) with rolled trousers, as worn by farmers in many folk dances
Regional options
A malong is one of the most versatile pieces you can own and can be worn several ways. Woven fabrics from the Cordillera or Mindanao make a striking choice. Buy from weavers where you can.
Tips
Add a salakot (wide hat) or a fan for flair. Most importantly, know what you're wearing. Being able to explain your costume is the best part of the day.
Wear the story
