Filipino Mythology for Beginners: Gods, Creatures and Where to Start
Filipino mythology is huge, regional and endlessly fascinating. Here's where to start.
Gods
Start with the Tagalog pantheon: Bathala the creator, Apolaki of the sun, Mayari of the moon and Tala of the stars. Then explore Visayan deities like Kaptan and Magwayen.
Creatures
Aswang: shape-shifting creature of the night, especially feared in the Visayas
Tikbalang: a tall creature with a horse's head that leads travelers astray
Kapre: a giant who sits in large trees smoking a cigar
Diwata: nature spirits or fairies, often guardians of forests and mountains
Duwende: small spirits who live in mounds and homes
Bakunawa: the sea serpent that swallows the moon
Heroes and epics
Many groups have epic poems, like the Hudhud of the Ifugao and the Darangen of the Maranao, both recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Always note the region a story comes from. Filipino mythology is many traditions, not one.
