Tia Carrere: Hollywood's Most Underrated Filipino American Icon
Born Althea Rae Duhinio Janairo in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, Tia Carrere is of Filipino descent, with Chinese and Spanish ancestry as well. She has been one of the most recognizable Filipino American faces in Hollywood for decades.
Discovered in Hawaiʻi
As a teenager in Honolulu, she was spotted and encouraged to act. She moved into modeling and television and landed a recurring role on General Hospital in the 1980s, followed by guest spots on shows like MacGyver and The A-Team.
Cassandra — Wayne's World (1992)
Her breakout: Cassandra, the rock band frontwoman in Wayne's World. She did her own singing on the film and the soundtrack, and returned for Wayne's World 2.
Juno Skinner — True Lies (1994)
In James Cameron's blockbuster, she played the villain opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Sydney Fox — Relic Hunter (1999–2002)
She led her own action-adventure series for three seasons, playing a professor and treasure hunter.
The voice of Nani — Lilo & Stitch (2002)
She voiced Nani, Lilo's older sister, in Disney's Lilo & Stitch and its follow-ups, and appeared in the 2025 live-action remake.
Two Grammy Awards
She's also a musician: Carrere won two Grammy Awards for Best Hawaiian Music Album, for ʻIkena and Huana Ke Aloha.
The barriers
Entering Hollywood in the 1980s, she was often told she was "too ethnic" or "exotic" and was offered stereotyped roles. She built a lasting career anyway.
Still showing up
In 2022, she appeared in Easter Sunday, a major studio comedy centered on a Filipino American family, alongside Jo Koy.
