On May 23, in response to a violent clash between the Maute group and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in southernmost island of Mindanao. With this declaration, fear, violence, and discrimination continue to spread, not just in the Philippines, but all over the world. In the midst of these attacks, we do not believe that increased militarization addresses the root causes of the conflict. We are calling for a just and lasting peace in the Philippines. NAFCON and Anakbayan Silicon Valley invite you to Pray for Peace, Pray for Marawi, a vigil where we call for the resumption of the peace talks and pay tribute to those who have perished under martial law. We will also be fundraising for evacuees and others affected by the attack and martial law in the region. If you are unable to attend, we encourage you to donate to conflict-afflicted communities in Mindanao through NAFCON: tinyurl.com/supportmarawi For questions, comments, or more information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
